DIY: Lavender dryer sachet tutorial

refabulous DIY lavender dryer sachet, eco-friendly tutorial and gift idea

At one time, my eco-friendly lavender sachets were a customer favorite in my Etsy shop.  I've made thousands of them over the years, using just about any kind of lovely reclaimed fabric I could find -- baby dresses, vintage linens, shirts, pants, skirts, dresses.  You name it -- I've probably used it.

Time passed, and my interests evolved into making eco-friendly totes and bags, and the beloved sachet became less of a focus for my shop (although they are still available.)
However, I want to share my simple pattern and tutorial for making my sachets with you.

You can use these sachets in place of dryer sheets IN your dryer.  YES!  Just toss them in your dryer with your wet laundry, and they will softly scent your laundry for several loads.  Refresh and rejuvenate your sachet by gently scrunching the sachet (causing the buds to release more oils.)  And once its scent fades, you can tuck the sachet into a drawer somewhere and it'll still smell sweet there for a long time, too.

You can give them as gifts, use them as party or shower favors, tuck them into drawers, trunks, closets, or wherever your heart desires.

>>>> IMPORTANT. . . .

These are very simple to make.  Yes, there are MANY sachet tutorials out there, and they are lovely.

BUT.

There are reasons behind the design and methods I use to make my dryer sachets.

This tutorial is designed to make a sturdy sachet -- one that will withstand tossing around in the dryer.

The amount of lavender inside each sachet may not seem like enough, but trust me -- it's the perfect amount for the buds to heat up, and for the oils to disperse within the sachet most efficiently for your laundry.  If you use too much lavender, the lavender can't move around much and get all warm and delicious.

Buuuut, if you're never going to use them in the dryer, then you can put as much dried lavender in the sachets as you'd like.  It may be a bit trickier sewing them closed if they're really stuffed full of lavender, but if you sew slowly and carefully, it shouldn't be a problem.

LEVEL: Beginner

Let's get started!

To make a set of 3 lavender dryer sachets, you'll need. . . .

  • THREE pieces of fabric cut 5" x 15" -- a fat quarter is plenty!  Reclaimed or new fabrics are fine.  Choose breathable fabrics such as cotton, cotton blends, poly cotton blends, linen, and linen-blend fabrics.  If they'll be used as dryer sachets, make sure the fabric is heat-safe!  Silks and rayons aren't good choices for these sachets.
  • pins (optional)
  • scissors
  • rotary cutter, ruler, and mat (optional, but very handy)
  • thread
  • sewing machine (or needle, if hand-stitching)
  • turning stick (chopstick, whatever)
  • iron
  • 2 oz. (or ~2 cups) dried lavender*
  • small funnel

*You may be able to buy dried lavender at your local health food stores.  However, you can find it rather inexpensively online, by the pound, here.  You'll be able to make several sachets with a pound of dried lavender!  :)

Cut. . . .

Cut your fabric into 3 rectangles, measuring 5" x 15".

Sew. . . .

Fold the rectangle in half, right sides together, placing the short ends together, so you now have a rectangle measuring 5" x 7.5".  You can now pin this in place, if needed.  (It's so small and simple, I didn't need to use any pins.)

Starting about 2" away from the fold, make a reinforcing stitch (a back-and-forth stitch) and then sew 1/4" seam around the rectangle. . .

when you reach the corner, about 1/4" from the edge,
stop with the needle down in the fabric,

lower the presser foot, and then resume sewing
for a nice, perfect corner.

. . . and continue sewing around the edge of the sachet until you reach the fold on the other side.  Make a reinforcing stitch  when you reach the fold / end.

Repeat to sew the other two sachets.

Next, trim the corners, EXCEPT for the folded opening corner.

be CAREFUL not to cut your seams!

Turn right side out, and gently poke corners and seams out.

At the opening, tuck in about 1/4" (the seam allowance) and then iron the sachets.  Don't skip this step!

Fill. . . .

Using the funnel, carefully pour about 2/3 cup of dried lavender buds into your sachet.

the chopstick can help the process along.

Close and finish. . . .

This part can be a teensy bit tricky, only because those lavender buds can sometimes get in the way of your needle.  Take your time, and it will be smooth sailing.

Place your sachet under your presser foot at the sachet opening about 1/4" away from the edge. . . .

Make a reinforcing stitch when you begin, then continue to stitch around the entire sachet, pivoting at each corner like you did before.  Scoot the lavender buds out of the way of the path of your needle when necessary.

When you've sewn around the entire sachet and reach your starting point again, stitch just past your starting point, about 1/8" from the edge.  This will be about halfway between the seam you just sewed, and the edge of the fabric.

Now, pivot, and sew a second seam between the first seam and the fabric edge.  Take your time!  You can do this.  :)

Continue around the entire sachet, pivoting at the corners like before.  It doesn't have to be perfect.

It's important not to skip this step for the strength and durability of the sachet bouncing around in the dryer.  (Don't ask how I know this... it isn't a pretty story.)

Reinforcing your stitch again at the very end.

see?  not perfect.  but it works!

Repeat to finish your set of sachets.
